Statement from the Editors on the March 16, 2021 Attacks in Atlanta, Georgia

Represent Series

We are deeply grieved and appalled by the March 16 shootings in Atlanta, GA that took the lives of eight women and men, including six Asian-Americans, from their families, friends, and community. The murders occurred as racial attacks against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community have increased and intensified over the past year. We at Represent stand in solidarity with our AAPI friends and colleagues in the national security community. Asian-Americans have always made vital contributions to the security and prosperity of our country, and we need their perspective and intellect now more than ever.

We started this series to highlight the importance and value of diversity in the field of national security and to provide a platform to discuss issues such as racism, discrimination, and misogyny. These are often difficult conversations to have, but they are not conversations that we can ignore. We encourage members of the national security community to contribute their own thoughts, ideas, and experiences to the Represent series and to continue building on the American promise of equal protection and equal opportunity for all.

Sincerely,

The Editorial Board of Represent
