International Security at the Nuclear Nexus Series

Understanding international security issues at the “nuclear nexus” is critical for managing a contemporary security environment characterized by rapid technological innovation, increased strategic competition, and a looming nuclear shadow. The International Security at the Nuclear Nexus article series was created to galvanize cross-pollination between the study of nuclear issues and other international security subject areas by exploring points of intersection.

Rebecca Hersman is director of the Project on Nuclear Issues and senior adviser for the International Security Program. Ms. Hersman joined CSIS in April 2015 from the Department of Defense (DOD), where she served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for countering weapons of mass destruction (WMD) since 2009. In this capacity, she led DOD policy and strategy to prevent WMD proliferation and use, reduce and eliminate WMD risks and respond to WMD dangers.

Reja Younis is the program manager and a research associate with the Project on Nuclear Issues in the International Security Program at CSIS. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social sciences and liberal arts from the Institute of Business Administration Karachi and a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Chicago.

Maxwell Simon is a program coordinator and research assistant with the Project on Nuclear Issues in the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in government and history. Prior to joining CSIS, he held positions as a junior research fellow at the Tony Blair Institute in London and as a legislative intern in the United States Senate. His current research interests include asymmetric security threats and long-standing conflicts in South Asia and the Middle East.
